Home Design Showcase: Bathed in Luxury

  • No space in your home is more personal than the master bath. Not only does it reflect your signature style, it’s the private place where you prepare to show your best self to the world. To design a master bath environment as luxurious and indulgent as a tub full of bubbles, read on.
This master bathroom by Krista + Home features sconces by Kallista and hardware from Waterworks. Tile laid in a herringbone pattern is one of Watterworth Alterman’s favorite applications to make the flooring pop.

Designer’s Take
Braving the Elements
Everyone knows that no dream home is complete without a spectacular master bath, but the copious amount of visualizing, planning and decision-making that goes into designing one can be intimidating. It’s a lot less scary when you approach each element one by one, says Krista Watterworth Alterman, creative director of Palm Beach–based interior design firm Krista + Home. Here, she breaks them down for us:

  • COLOR: All-white spaces are on their way out. You can still use neutrals, but think grays and taupes instead of stark whites. For example, a soft gray hue on your cabinets can really make the space “sing.”
  • MATERIALS: I try to use organic and natural materials such as veined-cut marble on every surface that I can.
  • TUB: A beautiful bathtub can really be a showstopper. There are so many sculptural options that look like works of art. Choose your tub first to anchor the space, and then build your design around it.
  • LIGHTING: The right lighting is everything. I often choose light fixtures that would normally be in a living room instead of a bathroom; it really helps to warm up the space and add some glam!
  • ACCESSORIES: Choose the softest, most luxurious towels you can afford. If you have open shelving, you can roll them up and display them to attain a spa-like feel. I also like to add beautiful scented candles, florals and greenery. And high-end hardware can have a big impact.
  • FLOORING: There are some fun trends happening with bold, colorful statement tiles in large-scale patterns. I have used this type of tile in many of my designs, and my clients love it!
