With more than 10 years of experience, lead designer Guimar Urbina of KIS Interior Design has etched out a unique niche that has earned her many awards and accolades, including Best of Houzz 2017 for excellence in design and service. Originally from Venezuela, Urbina moved to Miami at a young age and found herself inspired by the mix of cultures. “My style is contemporary with a refreshing feel,” she says. “In South Florida, I like for interiors to feel like havens, away from the sun.” Urbina also believes that interior spaces have the power to improve quality of life. With this in mind, she and her team are focused on developing design solutions that support each client’s specific needs. As a result, they’ve received rave reviews for their professionalism, impeccable taste and attention to detail.

When did you know you wanted to be a designer? I always knew I wanted to be involved with architecture. When it came to choosing my profession, I went straight into interior design, which is closely related to architecture but in a more intimate form.

First designer to make an impression on you: Philippe Starck. He is a genius at incorporating different finishes and coming up with unique shapes and compositions.

Design trends you are most excited about: I love the modern, industrial look that incorporates raw materials, such as concrete and different wood finishes, in a chic and contemporary manner.

Design rule you love to break: Breaking the rules is crucial to creating unique environments. I sometimes design around an accessory, such as an area rug, instead of larger furniture pieces.

Go-to paint color: Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace.

Item on your design wish list: The Chester Moon tufted sofa by Baxter.

Favorite home décor stores: Minotti, Poltrona Frau and The Wallpaper Company.

Book on your coffee table: The Romance of Flowers by Clinton Smith for Veranda.

Favorite destinations you’ve visited: Paris and London. Both have inspiring architecture and are full of life and culture. They offer great cuisine, too.

Vacation destination on your bucket list: There are too many to name! On the top of my list are Morocco, Thailand, Japan and Dubai.
