Biscayne Bay Kiwanis Club
TOUCHING THE LIVES
When Lew Matusow attended his first meeting with the Biscayne Bay Kiwanis Club, he was amazed at how many ways the service organization helped children in the City of Miami’s underserved communities.
“Once I saw the great things members did — both as a group and one-to-one — I jumped in with both feet,” said Matusow, who joined in 2011 and serves as the public relations chairman.
From reading to second graders at Santa Clara Elementary once a month to taking school-age children on guided tours of Everglades National Park and Biscayne Nature Center, club members can choose from a variety of service activities that fit their interests and schedules. Projects also include supporting student-led organizations, distributing school supplies, and chaperoning children at local attractions and sporting events.
“Our organization gives people an opportunity to give back to the young people who need it most,” said Club President Will Reich. “Our goal is to ensure the children of historically underserved communities have access to interesting educational opportunities beyond the normal curriculum, especially in the arts and sciences.”
Founded in 1950, the Biscayne Bay Kiwanis Club is one of the leading service clubs in South Florida and has touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of children. The Downtown Miami and Brickell-based charity achieves its goals through the Kiwanis Club of Biscayne Bay Youth Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization.
In October, more than 300 people attended the organization’s 34th Biscayne Bay Gala, its largest fundraising event. Former Miami Dolphins great Nat Moore was honored as the 2013 Michael Shores Citizen of the Year. With the help of the following sponsors, the club raised more than $100,000 to support service projects and student scholarships.
The law firm of Diaz Reus was a Diamond Sponsor of the event. Gold sponsors included: The Miami Dolphins; South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee; Baron, Breslin & Sarmiento P.A.; Lowry & Cook P.A.; law offices of Cordero, Richardson, Compo & Associates; Rasco Klock; and the South Florida Luxury Guide. Silver sponsors included; Shohat, Lowey & Shohat P.A.; Green and Kahn P.L.; and the Albertelli Law Firm.
