Influenced by the carefree days of Cuba’s mambo era and the American-style gastropub, Bread + Butter has garnered a loyal following rather quickly. The brainchild of Chef Alberto Cabrera, this cafeteria-style eatery was conceived from his big imagination, penchant for great cooking and strong connection to his past.
Fitting in well with the region’s diverse essence, the modest dining room exudes a trendy Williamsburg-chic-meets-little-Havana vibe, with nostalgic photos, subway tile and coiled light bulbs. A famous Jose Marti poem is handwritten on a wall across from the bar, which is crafted from reclaimed wood.
The décor, however, is just the first course. Cabrera has reinvented the food of his childhood and made it modern, with creations like the pan con mantequilla, a warm loaf of Cuban-style, Parker House bread served with house-made pickles and creamy butter; chorizo burger, dressed with napa cabbage kimchi, cilantro, onion, sriracha ketchup and crispy potato strings; and caramel-glazed plantains wrapped in crisp, house-made bacon and served with five-spice-scented syrup, sour cream and chives.
Other offerings include an impressive wine list, craft brews and special nights with live musicians playing soulful music throughout the evening.
