On Saturday, June 10, Honor Flight South Florida hosted its first-ever Cocktails with Heroes luncheon at The Capital Grille in Boca Raton. The event gave guests the chance to spend time with seven World War II veterans while honoring them for their service.
The seven-course meal consisted of dishes from the seven countries in which the veterans served, paired with corresponding beverage: Bordeaux wine for a first-wave D-Day survivor who liberated France; Dutch cocktails for a veteran who liberated the Netherlands Tuscan wine for a vet who served under General Paton and liberated Italy; German riesling for an Army veteran who liberated Germany; sake with a Navy pilot who served in the Philippines, China and Japan; and Austrian red wine with a Jewish WWII veteran who served in Austria. Guests also enjoyed a special wine that was personally flown in from Chuck Wagner (owner of Caymus Vineyards) to celebrate a Black veteran who served our country at a time when the country wouldn’t serve him.
The event also featured a silent auction, which raised enough money to charter a full 737 to fly 78 more WWII veterans to their memorial in Washington, D.C. honorflight.org
